A producer, researcher and filmmaker in subculture & ethnography, through more than a decade and half, Roy Dipankar began early as a non-conforming, artistically debauch A&R (artist & repertoire) manager for major labels. Apart from having worked with artists such as Mohit Chauhan, AR Rahman, Ustad Sultan Khan, Bohemia, Nucleya and Sean Roldan, he has released iconic ethno-bass music albums.

Originally from Mumbai and based out of Chennai, Roy has been a part of both corporate organisations, independent start ups and projects and people based across the globe like UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Israel and of course India. He has recently produced and directed as a part of an anthology of short films which is running successfully on Disney+Hotstar.

Roy has worked with the Films Division of India to showcase rare and progressive documentaries and films made through the decades, depicting the nation’s socio-economic, political and cultural landscape; having programmed more than 700 films as festival curator and held regular screenings and panels for community as well as industry development. Roy has been an Outreach Director for the Indian wing of Doc Society’s Good Pitch initiative in 2017 where he got to work with the Oscar nominated film “Writing With Fire”.

NAFiR, a film that takes a closer look at Indo-Persian Sufi artistry, was his directorial debut and premiered at the 21st Kolkata International Film Festival, 14th Film Dokumenter Festival, Yogyakarta Indonesia & Chennai International Doc & Short Film Festival in 2015.

Extreme Nation was Roy’s first feature doc – an award winning and critically acclaimed documentary on the Indian subcontinent’s underground subculture, premiered at the prolific red carpet of Jecheon International Music and Film Festival 2019, South Korea and was also screened at Wacken Open Air in Germany, considered to be one of the world’s biggest metal festivals. Extreme Nation is listed on Doc ‘N Roll TV – a British Film Institute initiative for underground music docs.

Being culturally conscious and ever curious to explore different worlds and their stories; Roy is an active contributor to the subculture eco-system. He is currently a part of the global research body called Sonic Street Technologies based out of Goldsmiths University of London and supported by the European Research Council.
